I'm going to start this review with a sort of disclaimer, and that is that a lot of my "problems" with this film are arguably just artistic nuances that don't align with my personal tastes. In terms of historical accuracy, Gohatto is right on the money for everything except the subject it's primarily dealing with.

When a handsome, girlish, 17-year-old arrives at an important samurai school, he sets some of the other men’s hearts aflutter, leading to homosexual jealousy among the ranks. Review: In many respects expectations for Nagisa Oshima's film "Gohatto" were quite high. The director who gave us the infamous "In the Realm of the Senses" returns to his chair behind the camera after a 13 years break and a stroke. Opvallend hierbij zijn de vele dialogen en de mystieke, kleine locaties die bijdragen aan het gevoel alsof de men naar een toneelstuk zit te kijken. Visueel is het een erg prikkelende film.

Gohatto review

Good Japanese films can offer refreshingly different and often subtle viewpoints and I would include Gohatto amongst them. I confess I find films with the subject of homosexuality difficult to watch but the subject matter was handled with a great deal of delicacy and insight and I found myself engaged from start to finish.
